2:42 Group Discussion Questions

Margin: Physical Energy
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 Introduction
: Excerpts from the book Margin.

a) Dr. Swenson's argument is that "a large percentage of Americans are sadly out of shape and have diminished physical reserves because of poor conditioning. Others, such as mothers of newborns and those who work two jobs, are chronically sleep-deprived. Still others suffer from chronic "biscuit poisoning." These three factors - poor conditioning, sleep deprivation, and obesity - constitute a physical energy desert where no margin can grow."
b) When we lack margin we feel under rested and overwhelmed. With no strength left for our own needs, let alone the needs of others, we put our tiredness to bed hoping tomorrow will be a stronger day." (Margin, p. 95)

1. Why is margin in physical energy important? Because we lack margin we have no energy to give to relationships with God, self and others simply because we over-eat (or eat poorly), under sleep (truly rest), and under-exercise.

2. In which of the following areas do you need to find margin?

a. Your eating habits?
b. Your sleep habits?
c. Your exercise habits?

3. How important is physical energy to you?

4. What are some ways we can get our physical energy back?

5. Read Deut 34:7 and Joshua 14:10-12

a. How do you compare health wise to these guys?
b. What do you think may have attributed to their good health?

i. Read Exodus 15:26 None of these diseases would plague the Israelites.
ii. 40 years of walking around would definitely help the cardio.
iii. A strict diet of what only God would allow you to eat or provide for you to eat would definitely cause a person to be healthier.

6. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

a. Do you think God is concerned with our physical fitness and condition? Why or why not?
b. What are your personal concerns about your physical energy level?

7. How can we get physical energy back?"

8. What are the factors that will protect our physical energy?

9. Discuss the following statement: Dr. Swenson writes, "The three problem areas when it comes to the erosion of our physical margin are sleep, obesity and exercise. Progress brings technology, affluence, and education, but not the kind of inner discipline necessary to maintain sound physical health. In some ways progress is too easy on us. Progress provides electricity and artificial lighting, without regard for the requirement of sleep. It caters food in overabundance, but without regard for the requirement of restraint. And it supplies transportation and convenience, but without regard for the requirement of physical activity. As a result, we sleep too little, eat too much, and move hardly at all." (Margin, page 96)

10. What are some practical steps we can take to restore margin in physical energy?

a. Take personal responsibility
b. Gain physical margin through emotional margin
c. Change your habits

11. Read 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

a. How does it make you feel to know that your body is the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit?
b. What is one change you need to make in order to increase your physical energy?

12. Read James 1:23 How would this verse apply to our physical exercise, our rest and our diet?

13. Read James 4:17 How does this verse apply to us regarding the way we take care of ourselves physically?

Conclusion: James is filled with advice on applying truth to our life:

a) We must persevere under trial (1:12). Remember that change will not be easy.
b) We will be tempted by our own evil desires (1:14). Anytime we choose a path, we will find opposition and the greatest opposition will usually be from within.
c) If we merely listen to what is true, but do not do it, we are self-deceived. (1:26)

d) Remember that my beliefs lead to thought; thought leads to action (word or deed); actions turn into habits; habits turn into character; character leads to destiny.
